Sunday, October 3
We were up at 5:15 a.m., had a very light snack at the main patio, and headed out for game viewing around 6:15. Today’s morning viewing was also fruitful – more lions, the leopards we saw last night were found again, this time lounging in a large tree, the smallest African mongoose ( living in abandoned termite mounds), etc.
After the drive, we freshened up and had a late brunch, around 10:00, after which we were free until this afternoon’s high tea…we just start yesterday all over again! I spent most of my spare time getting caught up on our blog and the hundreds of photos so far.
On the walk back to our unit, we saw wart hogs feeding on greenery all around the swimming pool area, and early in the afternoon a herd of elephants were grazing down the hill from our veranda, and one was about 50 yards from me, munching on vegetation. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto!
The evening viewing started right behind our building, with a large herd of elephants, including several babies…some closer than 10 feet to our truck. Following this was a cheetah – a rare find in this area – a herd of more than 300 water buffalo (again, I was about ten feet from a huge one – we drove right into the middle of the herd), a chameleon, a kudu, more impalas (they’re everywhere all the time) , the largest African mongoose, several varieties of boks, etc. The whole thing is mind-boggling!
During our break in the evening drive, we discussed the political and economic situation in South Africa with our guide (who is black). He was open to sharing his thoughts, and he believes things get better every day, but that there is a long way to go.
Dinner was on the veranda tonight…more good food! We had a lively political discussion with a couple from England – she was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, he in Cairo, Egypt.
